EW 1, 80788 M unchen, Germany Abstract: We describe the structure of a fuzzy logic controller designed as a driver assistance system, which aids in automatically following a leading car at a desired distance under various constraints. In order to be accepted by the driver, the controller has to match the style and driving preferences of the human driver to a certain degree. We show that fuzzy logic o ers the exibility to take aspects such as di erent driver types, desired velocities, and weather conditions into account in designing the controller. The performance evaluation is based on a complex tra c simulation that includes accurate models of the nonlinear vehicle dynamics and various tra c scenarios.
